S.B.1159 is a bill that Arizona has passed as a pathway for aspiring teachers to get into the classroom while still obtaining their bachelors degrees. This bill was created as an approach to address the teacher shortage that we have been experiencing as a state for the past six years. Supporters of this measure believe it will allow school districts to have access to more options when recruiting and get more teachers in classrooms quicker.
Those who are against the bill think that this is a workaround for the real problems, which is the underpaying of teachers or reducing class sizes. It is also felt that this approach can be a recipe for more teacher burnout earlier, making this shortage a continuous loop. This in itself could create great challenges for students and teachers.
